Executive coaching for engineering leaders in Vancouver

Executive Coaching for Engineering Leaders

The skills that made you a great engineer are not the skills that make you a great leader. You were promoted because you solved hard problems better than anyone. Now your hardest problems are people, politics, and priorities you cannot debug your way through. Most executive coaches have never run an engineering team and cannot tell the difference between a technical disagreement and a leadership failure. This is coaching built for the way technical leaders actually think.

The problem with generic executive coaching

Standard leadership coaching was designed for general managers, sales leaders, and corporate executives. It assumes you are comfortable with ambiguity, fluent in the language of influence, and energized by managing up. Engineering leaders are often none of those things, at least not yet. You were trained to value precision, to distrust hand-waving, and to earn respect through competence rather than charisma. A coach who does not understand that will spend months trying to turn you into someone you are not, instead of building on the strengths that got you here.

Coaching that speaks your language

Will Ferry spent more than twenty years inside engineering organizations before becoming a coach, leading teams at Pratt & Whitney Canada, Genesis Robotics, and Molex. He holds a PhD and is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), alongside ICF (ACC) and CPCC coaching credentials. That combination is rare for a reason: very few people have both the technical depth to understand your world and the coaching rigor to help you grow beyond it. You will not have to explain what a design review is, why your best engineer is also your biggest retention risk, or what it feels like to be the most senior technical person in a room full of executives who do not understand what you do.

What changes

Engineering leaders who work with Will move from reacting to leading. They stop being the bottleneck on every technical decision and start building teams that make good decisions without them. They learn to translate engineering reality into language the executive team acts on, to have the difficult conversations they have been avoiding, and to protect their own capacity before burnout forces the issue. Engagements run six to twelve months because durable change in how you lead does not happen in a quarter.

Common questions

How is this different from regular executive coaching?

Most executive coaches have a business or psychology background and no direct experience leading technical teams. Will led engineering organizations for two decades and holds a P.Eng. alongside his coaching credentials. The coaching is grounded in the specific challenges technical leaders face, from managing brilliant but difficult specialists to earning credibility with a non-technical executive team.

How much does executive coaching cost?

Executive coaching is priced per engagement rather than per session, reflecting the six to twelve month arc required for lasting change. Pricing depends on scope and cadence. The introductory conversation is the right place to discuss what an engagement would look like and what it would cost for your situation.

Is executive coaching worth it for engineering leaders?

The cost of a leadership gap at the engineering level shows up as attrition, slipped timelines, and decisions that stall waiting for one person. Coaching is worth it when the leader is ready to change how they operate, not just learn about leadership. The introductory conversation exists to assess exactly that fit before either side commits.

Do you coach remotely or in person?

Both. Will is based in North Vancouver and works with leaders across Greater Vancouver and the North Shore in person, and with clients elsewhere by video.
